1. MINISTRY ARTICLE: TYPE C PERSONALITY
   By Kiri Christina Hyatt (c)

The last week of March, Elizabeth Edwards, wife of U.S. Presidential hopeful John Edwards, and White House spokesman Tony Snow both announced their cancers’ had returned. What followed was a lot of news coverage on the issue of cancer, which made me wonder what is the personality profile of the cancer patient.

You have probably heard about Type A and Type B personalities. Well, researchers have discovered there is a Type C personality and C stands for cancer.

The person with Type C personality has difficulty expressing emotion. They tend to bottle things up and often are in denial of what they are feeling. This person avoids conflict, is ‘pathologically nice’, and exercises extreme control over their words and behavior. As long as everything is going perfect in their life they are okay, but they easily collapse during times of normal stress.

I know nothing about Tony Snow but the news has reported that Elizabeth and John Edwards lost a son in a car accident in 1996. That kind of tragedy would be difficult for anyone to bear. If Elizabeth Edwards tends to bottle up her emotions, her immune system may be unable to fight off the cancer. With her insistence that her husband continue the presidential race, it is clear she puts others ahead of her own needs. I even heard her say it would be selfish to ask him to drop out.

The medical theory is that everyone makes cancer cells, but for most of us our white blood cells recognize and destroy these dangerous cells. Stress though is hazardous to our immune system. When we are under stress our adrenal glands secrete hormones as part of the fight or flight response. When we are constantly under tension and anxiety, there is a constant flow of cortisol and other adrenal hormones. Those hormones suppress the immune system. When our immune system is suppressed it is unable to destroy cancer cells as they are formed. Left alone, cancer cells reproduce without any restrictions, forming tumors.

Conventional medicine has discovered that people diagnosed with cancer who join support groups or receive some type of psychiatric therapy have a better prognoses. They are more likely to be cured.

So, if you want to die of cancer keep stuffing those emotions, deny that you are angry or upset. Put yourself last and everyone else’s needs first.

On the other hand, if you want to prevent a cancer diagnoses now is a good time to start looking at yourself. Are you a people pleaser? Are you connected to your feelings? How do you respond when someone wrong’s you? These and other questions you ask yourself can help you decide if you are at increased risk for cancer.

Whether or not you fit the Type C Personality profile, forgiveness in Jesus is the only true way to find healing in your body, mind, and spirit. Only Jesus can heal the broken heart. He wants to heal your emotions and free you from getting sick. Cancer is NOT inevitable.

Ask God today to forgive you from stuffing your emotions. Ask God to help you learn to recognize when you are sad, angry, etc. Choose today to forgive those people who have hurt you. Choose to forgive yourself. In the past I have shared a prayer for forgiving others. Today I want to share with you a prayer for forgiving yourself.

Dear Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, and as an act of my free will, I confess, repent and renounce my (specific sin of self-hatred). I ask you to forgive me for this sin. I purpose and choose to forgive myself for this (specific sin) from my heart. I release myself from any guilt or shame because of this self-bitterness

In the name of Jesus and by the power of His blood, I cancel Satan’s power and authority over me because of the self-bitterness of (name specific sin mentioned above). In the name of Jesus, I command this spirit of self-bitterness to go.

Holy Spirit, I invite you into my heart to heal me of self-bitterness. Please speak your words of truth to me about this situation.

2. MESSAGE FROM A FRIEND

[If you have a testimony you would like to share, please send it in.]

An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Later, they passed some people that remarked, "What a shame, he makes that little boy walk."

They then decided they both would walk! Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So, they both rode the donkey. Now they passed some people that shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey.

The boy and man said they were probably right, so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.

The moral of the story? If you try to please everyone, you might as well... Kiss your "donkey" good-bye.

4.1 Sodas Raise Cancer Risk, U.S. Study Finds a
    May 17, 2004

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Carbonated drinks may raise the risk of esophageal cancer, a usually fatal disease, researchers reported on Monday.

Several studies presented at a meeting of cancer and gastrointestinal experts in New Orleans showed that what people eat and drink could affect a range of cancers.

"This research supports the widespread medical recommendations for healthy eating," said Dr. Lee Kaplan of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

A team at Tata Memorial Hospital in India found a strong correlation between the rise in per capita consumption of carbonated soft drinks in the past 50 years and a documented increase in rates of esophageal cancer in the United States.

Team members studied U.S. Department of Agriculture data to find that per capita consumption of carbonated drinks rose by more than 450 percent, from 10.8 gallons on average in 1946 to 49.2 gallons in 2000.

And over the past 25 years, the incidence rates of esophageal cancer have risen by more than 570 percent in white American men. Esophageal cancer affected 13,900 U.S. men and women in 2003 -- more than 10,000 men -- and killed almost all of them, according to the American Cancer Society.

The number of esophageal cancer cases clearly followed the rise in intake of carbonated soft drinks, the researchers found.

That could be coincidence, but they also found research that showed a possible biological basis for the effect. Carbonated soft drinks cause the stomach to distend, which in turn causes the gastric reflux associated with esophageal cancer.

The researchers found similar trends worldwide. Countries with per capita annual consumption of more than 20 gallons of fizzy soft drinks also had rising rates of esophageal cancer.

"The surprisingly strong correlation demonstrates the impact of diet patterns on health trends," Dr. Mohandas Mallath, who led the study, said in a statement.

But another study showed a potential benefit from drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages.

A team at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease studied people with a high risk of liver problems and found those who drank more caffeine had fewer liver abnormalities.

They surveyed 5,944 adults at high risk for liver damage because of heavy drinking, hepatitis infection, iron overload or obesity.

The more coffee they drank, the more likely they were to have normal liver function, the researchers found.

"These results warrant further study," said Dr. James Everhart, who helped lead the study.

4.2 Processed Meat Ups Pancreas Cancer Risk
    Apr 20, 2005
    By Megan Rauscher

ANAHEIM, California (Reuters Health) - Eating a lot of red meat, and particularly processed meat, increases the risk of pancreatic cancer, according to findings from a large multiethnic study.

The results hint that carcinogenic substances used in meat processing rather than the fat or cholesterol content might be responsible for the association, Dr. Ute Nothlings told Reuters Health at the annual gathering of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Nothlings, from the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii in Honolulu, and colleagues examined the relationship between diet and pancreatic cancer in 190,545 men and women who included African Americans, Japanese Americans, Caucasians, Latinos and Native Hawaiians.

During an average follow up of 7 years, 482 subjects developed pancreatic cancer.

After taking into account age, smoking status, history of diabetes, family history of pancreatic cancer and ethnicity, subjects with the highest intake of processed meat had a 67 percent increased risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared to those with the lowest intake of processed meat.

A high intake of pork and total red meat increased the risk of pancreatic cancer by about 50 percent.

Consumption of poultry, fish, dairy products, and eggs did not influence the overall risk of pancreatic cancer, nor did overall intake of total fat, saturated fat or cholesterol.

"Due to the large size of the study with 482 cases, this is an important piece of evidence for a reduced intake of red meat and processed meat as target factors for disease prevention," Nothlings told Reuters Health.

4.3 Eating processed meats raises stomach cancer risk
    Reuters
    August 2, 2006

Eating more processed meats such as bacon, sausage and smoked ham increases the risk of stomach cancer, Swedish scientists said on Wednesday.

A review of 15 studies showed the risk of developing stomach cancer rose by 15 to 38 percent if consumption of processed meats increased by 30 grams (1 ounce) per day, the Karolinska Institute said in a statement.

Stomach cancer accounts for nearly one tenth of total deaths from cancer, the institute said.

The research, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, collated studies covering 4,704 individuals between 1966 and 2006 and showed "unequivocal" results, the institute said.

"Nobody had carried out this type of analysis into processed meats and stomach cancer," said Susanna Larsson, one of the authors of the study at the institute.

"And our results from a mean value show very clearly that there is an association between increased consumption of processed meat products and stomach cancer."

The institute said processed meats were often salted or smoked, or had nitrates added to them, in order to extend their shelf-life which could be connected to the increased risk of stomach cancer, the fourth most common type of cancer.

"We hope that further studies will clarify the interaction between the consumption of processed meats and other factors, such as other dietary factors and the effects of different bacteria on the incidence of stomach cancer," Larsson said.

4.4 Fizzy Drinks Increase Risk Of Pancreatic Cancer, Study Finds
    Science Daily
    November 8, 2006

The high consumption of sweetened food and drink increases the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, according to a new study from Karolinska Institutet. A heavy intake of fizzy drinks, creamed fruit and sugar in coffee are three common ways of increasing the risk.

Pancreatic cancer is a very serious form of cancer that is possibly caused when the pancreas produces heightened levels of insulin as a consequence of upset glucose metabolism. A well-known way of increasing insulin production is to eat a lot of sugar. Scientists have now, for the first time, shown that the consumption of sweetened food and drink affects a person's chances of developing pancreatic cancer.

The study began in 1997 when scientists ran a dietary survey of almost 80,000 healthy women and men. This group was subsequently monitored until June 2005. According to the cancer registry, 131 people from this group had developed cancer of the pancreas.

The researchers have now been able to show that the risk of developing pancreatic cancer is related to the amount of sugar in the diet. Most at risk were those who drank high quantities of fizzy or syrup based (squash) drinks. The group who said that they drank such products twice a day or more ran a 90% higher risk than those who never drank them. People who added sugar to food or drinks (e.g. coffee) at least five times a day ran a 70% greater risk than those who did not. People who ate creamed fruit (a product resembling runny jam) at least once a day also ran a higher risk -- they developed the disease 50% more often than those who never ate creamed fruit.

"Despite the fact that the chances of developing pancreatic cancer are relatively small, it's important to learn more about the risk factors behind the disease," says Susanna Larsson, one of the researchers involved in the study.

"It is perhaps the most serious form of cancer, with very poor prognoses for its victims. Since it's difficult to treat and is often discovered too late, it's particularly important that we learn to prevent it," she says.

4.5 Red meat link to breast cancers
    November 14, 2006

Eating large amounts of red meat may double young women's breast cancer risk, a study suggests.

US researchers writing in Archives of Internal Medicine looked at over 90,000 pre-menopausal women.

Having one-and-a-half servings of red meat per day almost doubled the risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer compared to three or fewer per week.

UK cancer experts said animals in the UK were not given growth hormones which are used for US animals.

Researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston studied women who were part of the Nurses' Health Study II from 1989 to 2003.

The women filled out questionnaires in 1991, 1995 and 1999, on which they recorded how often they regularly consumed more than 130 different foods and beverages.

A portion of meat was defined as beef, pork or lamb as a main dish, in a sandwich or eating a hamburger, bacon, hot-dogs or other processed meat as part of a meal.

Every two years, they reported whether or not they had developed breast cancer. Cases were confirmed through hospital records and pathology reports.

The researchers also looked at the whether the women's tumours were fuelled by the hormones oestrogen or progesterone.

By the end of the study, 1,021 women had developed breast cancer.

There were 512 cases of cancers which were oestrogen and progesterone-receptor positive, 167 that were negative, 110 with mixed status and 232 with unknown status.

Public health implications

When the researchers looked at meat intake and cancer risk, it was found that women who ate more than one-and-a-half servings of red meat per day had almost double the risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer compared with those who ate three or fewer servings per week.

Writing in Archives of Internal Medicine, the researchers led by Dr Eunyoung Cho, said: "Several biological mechanisms may explain the positive association between red meat intake and hormone receptor-positive breast cancer risk.

They say cooked and processed red meats have been shown to contain cancer-causing chemicals such as heterocyclic amines which are created during the cooking of red meat.

A second potential link is the growth hormones which are given to cattle in the US, although not in Europe.

The researchers also say red meat is a source of heme iron, which previous research has shown fuels the growth of oestrogen-induced tumours.

Dr Cho's team added: "Given that most of the risk factors for breast cancer are not easily modifiable, these findings have potential public health implications in preventing breast cancer and should be evaluated further."

'Complex causes'

Dr Sarah Rawlings, of the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity, said: "Very little is known about diet and breast cancer risk because we eat a variety of foods and separating out the effect of an individual food is difficult."

She added: "Previous studies looking at red meat and breast cancer have been inconclusive.

"This study relied on women accurately recalling their diet over the past year and was carried out in the US where animals receive growth hormones not permitted in the EU.

And Maria Leadbeater, nurse specialist at Breast Cancer Care, added: "To date we are still a long way off fully determining the many and complex root causes of this disease and it is an area for further research.

"Further studies will need to be done to fully establish the exact nature of any link between a diet high in red meat and breast cancer.

"The benefits of eating a healthy and varied diet are well established and the biggest risk factors for breast cancer remain gender and increasing age."
